In recent years, each McDonald's franchise has branched out by adding salads, healthy snacks and upscale coffee to remain competitive.

Nonetheless, television has always played a central role in the advertising strategy of the company. Ronald McDonald, a fictional clown and company mascot is second only to Santa Claus as the most recognized figure in the world and many times is prominently featured in advertising.
